CSCL 2005 Presenter Instructions
 


Dear CSCL Authors/Presenters,

Below please find instructions relevant for preparing your CSCL 2005 presentations. These instructions are consistent with the instructions that were sent with your paper acceptance notices, but provide much more detail in some cases. We describe preparations for interactive, lecture and plenary papers, in that order. It is especially important that everyone (including session moderators and participants as well as presenters) understand the interactive paper session format, as it is new.

In all sessions, a computer connected to a data projector will be provided.

Interactive Paper Sessions:

In these sessions we are trying a format that is m

ore consistent with the collaborative and interactive philosophy of CSCL. Papers assigned to these sessions will benefit from extended time for discussion with and/or demonstration to an audience sharing your interests.
 

 

Format:

1. Each presenter in the session gives a 5 minute presentation advertising their work to the full audience.
2. After all presentations are done, authors will then move to their "stations," described below, and conference participants will then choose and move to the stations that interest them.
3. Presenters and participants interact for the remainder of the session. We recommend that presenters plan for 20 minutes of interaction, and provide participants with the opportunity to move to a new station every 20 minutes. There are 4 presenters in the one hour sessions and 6 presenters in the 1.5 hour sessions, so:

1 hour session: 4*5 = 20 minutes for formal presentations, followed by two 20-minute interactive sessions

1.5 hour session: 6*5 = 30 minutes for formal presentations, followed by three 20-minute interactive sessions

Each station will include a table and space for a poster. Although electrical power may be available, this is not guaranteed, and we recommend that you bring a fully charged laptop if needed. There will be wireless Internet. You may choose how to use your hour at the presentation station.
Options include:
* Demonstration of software or physical artifacts
* Presentation using a poster
* Presentation using a laptop
* Most importantly, discussion with audience based on any
of the above.

Preparation:
Come prepared to deliver a 5-minute introduction to your work. Adherence to this timeframe is critical for enabling everyone to have time for the interactive portion. (We know it can be done: this format has been used quite successfully at a series of CILT conferences in the US.)

There will not be time for hooking up a laptop. Please bring slides in a platform-independent format on CDs or flash drives for transfer to a shared computer, and do this transfer during the break before your session starts.
Additionally, we recommend that you put your presentation on a web site. If you show up with a laptop, the time to hook it up will be charged to your presentation time (e.g., if it takes 4 minutes to get it working then you will have 1 minute for your presentation).

Also prepare and bring materials for further tabletop/poster presentation and interaction. Posters can be mounted on most of the walls using long sewing pins (the wallpaper is designed for this purpose); and rolling posterboards accepting push-pins will also be available.

Comment on scheduling:
The assignment of papers to sessions is completely different than in a traditional conference lecture format. Unlike the lecture format, presenters in the interactive format are not able to attend each others' extended presentations, as they will be busy running their own. Therefore, if we scheduled papers on similar topics in the same interactive paper session, that would prevent the very people most likely to be interested in your work from being able to interact with you! Because of this, we mixed a diversity of paper topics when assigning papers to the interactive paper sessions. If we have been successful, you will be able to present your work in one session and then attend the interactive presentations of similar work in other sessions. This will have the added benefit that participants who come to a session for a particular paper may be exposed (in the 5 minute presentations) to work and ideas they might not have otherwise sought out, increasing multivocal discourse and cohesiveness in the community.

 

 

Lecture Track Presentations:

These sessions are also called "parallel"
presentations, and follow the traditional conference lecture format. Session of this type are designed to bring advanced or significant work to the attention of specialist communities.
 

 

Format:
Each paper will be given a 20 minute presentation period followed by a 10 minute discussion period, led by a session discussant. Most sessions are 1.5 hours with three presentations; a few are 1 hour with two presentations.

Preparation:
Please design and rehearse your presentation to fit within a 20 minute slot.
We will be strict about this time limit in order to allow adequate time for audience participation in discussion and also for the next presenter to set up.

We strongly recommend that you bring any multimedia materials on multiple media such as a CD-ROM and a flash drive (bring both to be safe), and additionally put your presentation on a web site just in case. Setup your presentation on conference computers before the session. If it is necessary to use your own laptop, this may be possible, but you should have alternatives available. Laptop setup time will be charged to your presentation time.

 

 

Plenary Presentations:

Reviewers recommended a few papers for plenary presentation because they address the theme of the conference (The Next 10 Years of CSCL) in a manner of interest to the entire CSCL community.
 

 

Format and Preparation:

See instructions for Lecture Track, but note the following differences in time:

Wednesday afternoon: Four papers were assigned to the 90-minute session:
Kienle, Hoadley, Jones, and Shaffer. We have asked Kienle and Hoadley to coordinate their presentations, which are on a similar topic, into a single time slot. (Keinle may need a little more time than Hoadley, which was a short paper.) Jones and Shaffer will each have 20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes discusison.

Saturday morning: Suthers, Wegerif and Stahl: as for Lecture presentations.
